What happened to the Whyalla steelworks?

Liberty Steel/GFG Alliance was placed into administration on 19 February 2025 (KordaMentha appointed). The federal and SA governments announced a $2.4 billion rescue package on 20 February 2025. The precinct framework picks up where the rescue ends — turning Whyalla from continuous-rescue town into permanent green-steel capital.

What is sovereign titanium?

Titanium sponge production using Iluka Eneabba's mineral sands feedstock. Titanium is critical for aerospace, defence and medical devices — Australia currently exports the mineral sands and imports titanium. Whyalla closes the loop using its existing metallurgical workforce and Kroll process expertise.
